The hot surface igniter offers an alternative ignition method, particularly in gas ovens. Instead of generating a spark, a hot surface igniter uses a silicon carbide or silicon nitride heating element that glows red-hot to ignite the gas. Hot Surface Ignition (HSI) systems represent approximately 45% of the total gas ignition control market. Universal hot surface igniters are now available as drop-in replacements for OEM units across multiple brands, often including universal breakaway brackets and hardware for simplified installation.
 
The growing availability of UL-listed universal ignition components—complete with ceramic wire nuts and clear installation instructions—is reshaping consumer expectations.
